Nathan Aspinall staged a sensational comeback to edge past Luke Humphries and claim the Night Ten title on a gripping night of BetMGM Premier League darts in Manchester.
The Stockport-born star delivered a night to remember in front of his home crowd, defeating Rob Cross, Michael van Gerwen, and ultimately Humphries to secure his first nightly victory of the season.
In a dramatic finale at the AO Arena, Aspinall battled back from 3-0 down to beat world number one Humphries, winning six of the final seven legs to climb into the Play-Off spots.
“I’ve never felt nerves like that before – those last darts were terrifying because I was in Manchester, ” Aspinall admitted, after eventually sealing a 6-4 win despite missing five match darts.
“With my family, friends, and so many fans here backing me, I’m just over the moon to get the win for them.
"This is a huge moment for me – a win like this in my hometown gives me so much confidence going forward.
“When I’m feeling confident and scoring heavily, there aren’t many players who can stop me.
“These last couple of years have been incredibly tough, but I’m a fighter. I never give in, and I’m grateful every day to do the job I love.”
Aspinall began the night in dominant fashion, producing a perfect six-from-six on doubles to beat Rob Cross and notch his eighth consecutive win over the 2018 World Champion.
He then maintained his momentum with a ton-plus average to cruise past Van Gerwen 6-2 in the semi-finals. The Dutchman had earlier returned from injury with a gritty 6-4 win over Chris Dobey.
Humphries, meanwhile, narrowly missed out on a third nightly win despite making history with his quarter-final performance – a dazzling 118.43 average in a 6-1 thrashing of Stephen Bunting, the third-highest in Premier League history and sixth-highest ever in a televised PDC event.
The world number one followed that up by beating Luke Littler 6-4 in the semis, cutting the teenager’s lead at the top of the table to five points.
Earlier, Littler snapped a six-match losing streak against Gerwyn Price in a dramatic quarter-final clash. Despite Price hitting a perfect nine-darter and averaging 103.47, Littler came out on top 6-3.
Price became the fourth player this season to hit perfection, joining Littler, Cross, and Humphries in achieving the feat.
